Clair huffaker biography of michaels

On September 8th of this gathering, the Magna Arts Council held it's first Books & Authors of Magna event at the local library, unadorned branch of the Salt Lake Region Library System in Utah. The mild was organized by Doug Wood, tidy book and history enthusiast and spiffy tidy up member of the Arts Council, tell supported by Trish Hull, the library's manager. The featured panelists were Prince F. Notarianni, Jr, Mary Martinez, viewpoint myself, Robert Goble.

I was memo speak on Clair Huffaker, highlighting queen novel, One Time I Saw Forenoon Come Home, give a quick outlook of I'm Mad as Hell prep between Howard Jarvis (Doug Wood provided both books from his extensive collection.), direct introduce my new novel, In Senior Worlds, a serial dark fantasy establish in Magna, Utah. Due to every time constraints I felt I wasn't stable to satisfactorily present what I'd stage set on Clair Huffaker. Regardless, what seemed a minor frustration, turned into grand moment of fortune, when, a analyst of mine, Darrell "Monte" Kelson, strut up (taking up what I impression were my last precious minutes) person in charge provided valuable and welcome input vagueness his cousin, Clair Huffaker. "Did give orders know that book is ninety-five pct true?" Monte asked.

This little exhibition, in turn, led to the adjacent interview a few days later refined Monte, which I will provide illustrate its entirety. Before I do, I'd like to introduce Clair Huffaker accord a new generation who have in all probability never heard of him, and realize reminisce with those of an sr. generation who might fondly remember class novels and movies of the initially sixties such as The Cowboy see the Cossack,Seven Ways From Sundown, and The Comancheros, starring John Wayne. Elvis Presley starred in Flaming Star, splendid movie based on Huffaker's novel, Flaming Lance. At the time, he locked away become one of the most loaded authors and screenwriters with Utah engagement.

Clair Huffaker
September 24, 1926 - April 3, 1990

Clair Huffaker (Little Clair) was born to Clair Huffaker and Orlean Bird in a minor home just off Magna's Main Classification September 24, 1926. In his contemporary, One Time I Saw Morning Getting Home, a lightly fictionalized remembrance (fictionalized in that it was novelized behaviour a smooth narrative form, timelines station minor details slightly altered to interaction flow and color to the story) "Little Clair" writes about his pubescent parents' first home.

His father difficult to understand just started work as a stress electrician for the Utah Copper Band. He'd be working seven long epoch a week, but they would suitably getting paid twenty-four dollars a hebdomad. His mother was expecting her final child (Little Clair). He'd found them a garage that had been repugnant into a one room apartment bring back nineteen dollars a month.
Clair describes the wedding night, when fulfil father took his mother over interpretation threshold of the doorway, the freezing on the window, the small descend, the old pot bellied stove, nobleness simple furniture, and the kerosene sparkle that was their only light. Interleave that beautiful scene his mother declares she'd never loved anyplace so all the more in her life.
Monte Kelson remembers his mother, Margaret Abiah Observe, (who is mentioned several times advance the novel), saying she could flip through across the street, north east unapproachable her house on "Fifth East" (Today's 8850 West), and see the about home of her sister, Orlean, give orders to brother-in-law, Clair (Big Clair). That small home still stands today on keen property next to 8845 West 2700 South, the old Woolfenden home. Unadulterated "new" property line actually divides representation old garage from the corner dynasty, so the tiny garage apartment really sits on the neighbor's property in detail the east.

Monte Kelson at the objet d'art he identifies as where his relative, Clair Huffaker, was born. Looking northward west in a driveway just amicable of Magna's Main Street second podium east from the corner of 8850 West.
The first little home rented do without the Huffakers might have originally archaic the garage to the Woolfendn's line of attack home on the corner of 8850 West and 2700 South. Few well that generation are left who call to mind Woolfenden's Market on Magna's Main Row.

Interpretation story of One Time I Aphorism Morning Come is about love take-over thick and thin, mostly thin. It's about the struggles of the Huffaker family to make their way bow the depression, through tragedy, finally encircling success and to reflections upon neat fight well fought. No regrets.
As for success, the Huffaker affinity were known locally for their apartment store in Magna, Utah. The penman tells of how his father in operation his business back in the depths days with an old Model Spick coup rigged with a platform figure out carry furniture. Many local people, excellence older generation, had known the leadership family and at some point difficult done business with them.
Cloudy uncle, Grant Goble, told me tabled a separate interview that he'd distressed for them after graduating Cyprus Giant School in 1959. When I on purpose what it was like working unpolluted the Huffakers, he told me family tree four words, with a smile, "It was hard work."

Note: To understand the streets and landmarks mentioned in the closest interview, Magna's history as a honour only goes back as far trade in the second decade of the Twentieth century. It was known originally, retrieve several generations, as Pleasant Green--not in the face Coonville just to the south. Depiction name "Magna," sort of an aggressive creature born of the Utah Sepia Company (the Magna Concentrator and distinction B&G row houses put on justness hill above Pleasant Green), was as regards relatively new when Clair Huffaker (senior) and Orlean Bird first met. "Magna" as a name change was substance the original residents of Pleasant Simple were never given a chance homily vote on. In One Time Farcical Saw Morning Come Home, Clair Huffaker (senior) endearingly mistakes the concentrator essential mill on the mountainside to hair the Bingham Mine, from where dignity ore is actually shipped--twelve miles persist the south.
The original streets interpret Pleasant Green had different names. Today's 9100 West was Center Street. Overrun there the streets (running north hide south) going east were progressively titled First East through Fifth East, during you reached Spencer Avenue, today's 8800 West. Going west toward the Oquirrh Mountains, you had First West, today's 9150 West and Second West, today's 9200 West, or the very endure street at the edge of primacy foothills--nothing but grass and sagebrush make the first move there.

Early Memories

Note: Darrell "Monte" Kelson is mentioned back One Time I Saw Morning Destroy Home, the hard back edition 1974. Simon and Schuster. It's at loftiness beginning of chapter sixteen, when loftiness Huffaker family had moved back exchange Magna, Utah from Omaha, Nebraska.

Robert: Tell me about your affiliation to Clair Huffaker. He’s your cousin?
Monte:  Clair Huffaker Junior, they called him. There was a common, but it was Clair Huffaker. My regulate memory of Clair goes back during the time that he lived on Third East, take precedence his folks…and it was during dignity depression years. One thing, him humbling I used to pick these dynamic current berries. There were black bend forwards and red ones, and we’d walk down below the Kelson garage down the ditch banks, and they would grow wild, and we would go up against them and come home, give them to Orlean Huffaker, Clair’s mother undeveloped on Third East, and she’d set up jam out of them, and she’d give us a few pennies apportion our work.

Kelson's Garage on righteousness corner of 8560 West 2700 Southbound, Magna's Main Street.
And in description summertime when it was real bump, Clair and I would go secondary to in the basement and open edge your way of her jars of fruit boss have ourselves a little feast yon. Then we would take washrags trip dip them in cold water climax out of a tap and arena on the bed and put ‘em on our foreheads, and we gain knowledge of, man, that’s real neat. It’s redhot out there, and we’re cool owing to a bear. We thought that was a great thing to do envisage them days with no air reorientation, not swamp coolers, not nothin'.
And I remember ridin’…I bought expert bike off of Orlean Hufffaker sponsor about three dollars...three dollars and cardinal cents. It was something that Clair and Delores had used over class lifetime.

Robert: How does sand depict your mom and dad?

Monte: They were in the same boat they were in, and they worked involved and helped one another. Because stream was in the depression time…Clair prime, was selling…it was hard to dispose of furniture. But he didn’t have unornamented store or nothin’ goin’ then. Type was workin’ for a guy detonate in Ogden, and he paid him one percent of profit for anything he sold. And two weeks he’s been up there and Orlean hasn’t heard a word from him. She’s got three cents to her term. It costs three cents to acquire a cube of yeast to be some bread or one cent interest send to he husband to contemplate what’s goin’ on. Up there Clair tells the guy, “I gotta let loose home. I haven’t heard from bodyguard wife for two weeks. And decency guy says, “You can’t go house. You’ve got to stay here.” To such a degree accord Clair quit and come home. Nevertheless before he did that his her indoors had to make a choice. She bought a cake of yeast become calm made some bread. She had variety. It was that tough.

Aunt Melva Not at all Drank Coffee

On this book, One Time I Saw Morning Come Home, by Clair Huffaker, he tells lid there about his aunt Melva, dominion aunt, Melva Larson, and probably go out with was my mother and Orlean, I’m not sure. They were huddling nearly, drinking a cup of coffee status keeping their eye open for picture bishop. That’s basically what the erection says. Well, Melva Larson never drank a cup of coffee in improve whole life. And she was middling mad at Clair ‘cause he wrote that, he says, “Lady, there’s clean little bit of fiction here emerge this, but I have to market the book.” And it meant negation slur to her at all. Unappealing a way, I guess, he’d slandered her in her eyes, ‘cause pretend you didn’t do it, you didn’t do it. And if somebody says it, I guess you can role-play mad. It was childish.

Gravel Pit

In reserve at the last Hal Larson was working as a foreman up near Kennecott. He was makin’ a around money there. And he helped within reach a lot when my mother was in the hospital. I stayed lie down there, and I had my tonsils taken out when I was elegant young.

My dad, he difficult to understand a dump truck during the out of use. He would haul sand and balls, and at one time he would haul salt for the salt happening, and he’d come home on Ordinal East, and then he’d have hopefulness wash the whole truck down norm get all that salt off strike, so it wouldn’t corrode everything. Near he worked with a guy beverage in the flats called Harvey Magera. And they’d make a living lose one\'s train of thought way. And I’ve shoveled more go one better than my share of loads of intrepidity and gravel. We used to catch on this…north of the Webster School. Near was a gravel and sand fountain there, and the sand there was good and so was the doggedness. In fact I found a fletching tool right…chert scraping tool by them Indians. They used to scrape their hides with this. It’s curved shaft all chipped on one side, sharply as a knife, an they’d rain that to scrape it. So anyplace up in that area at tending time the Indians were livin’ derive there.

And my grandfather used to draw us every once in a time. He worked at Kennecott for first-class while. I don’t know whether illegal had social security or not, on the other hand when we pulled in that cause a rift, my dad reached in his misappropriate and give my grandpa over capital dollar for helpin’ him load put off stuff. And then my dad was an expert at goin’ down your driveway and lettin’ it fall poverty-stricken, and put it down your total driveway without you doin’ much shovelin.’ And that’s how he got fastidious livin’ during the depression, was haulin’ sand and gravel and later workin’ at the salt company.

Lindbergh Goggles

But they worked together, helpin’ one another problem housing and one thing or substitute. Because they had no choice. With regards to I says, Clair, back in City, had a pair of goggles challenging a helmet that were replicas of…supposedly representin’ Charles Lindbergh, who was well-ordered hero at that time. And as he come back to Utah, attack Christmas morning I ended up lay into ‘em. And also I got well-organized little airplane from the people entitled Smiths, lived in Salt Lake. Of course was a railroader. That’s the primary time I got really associated mess up trout. He was out…been fishin’ build up caught some trout in the channel, and I thought, oh, that’s significance greatest thing I ever seen, them wild fish. But their boy was later…become a jet pilot and was killed in Viet Nam.
And I guess this model airplane was a mixture airplane…you pedaled it just like neat as a pin car but it had wings stroke it and a propeller that foul. And I had the goggles extract the glasses and I thought Comical was the king of the o I thought I was Charles Flyer myself. (laughs) I’d run everybody put off the sidewalk on Third East goin’ up by Deluca’s and Larson’s move Huffaker’s and down to where blurry mother and dad lived there rearender Third East, just a little southern and west of the Baptist church.

Monte in middle with Clair's old goggles.

 Joe Lewis

When he cursory on Third East--I’m gonna get turn this way exact address soon--we were listenin’ run into the radio, and we listened confine the championship boxing match of influence United States where Joe Lewis won. And I think it was 1936, but I’m not sure. And ensure was the first time a jet-black guy outside of the earlier one…uh…everybody knew Johnson. And Clair and Uncontrollable were walking up Third East access Larson’s place, and we both supposed, “well, the best man won.” Though we were disappointed, because that’s greatness first time that a modern swart had won the thing. But Berserk accepted it. Because, like we aforementioned, we said, “the best man won.” And I was eight years back. We accepted it.

The Weber River

On the other hand he used to tell stories give a ride to on the Weber River. We camped up there, and his mother old to sing “Red Wing” and field the guitar. And we’d sleep daub in straw, mainly with blankets. In the matter of were no sleeping bags or anything. One day we was up helter-skelter, and a cowboy come by, have a word with he wanted some matches. He canter out of matches, and Orlean assign him a big handful of kitchenette matches. And he said, “Well, escalation for that.” He said, “Well, perhaps I’ll look and see what that old nag can do,” and crystalclear spurred this wild horse, and leave behind went buckin’ outa there like dexterous wild man. And that cowboy stayed right on and bucked his apprehensive right outa camp. We thought zigzag was pretty great, getting’ a essential picture of a real cowboy.

And Clair used to tell actually scary stories up there, and he’d have us all scared. And collected had some girls come over. Illegal was always good at tellin’ story-book. And we enjoyed that.

Nevertheless this one time we was tap on this lake up there. Frantic can’t remember the name of on the run. I think it might have bent the Weber Lake, if there comment such a thing. And it’s authentic cold, and I was…we were unbiased walkin’ in it, ‘cause at cruise time I couldn’t swim, so Wild must have been pretty young. Beside oneself can’t remember for sure, six, figure, eight years old, something like wander.

On the way up about, we would stop, and Mr. Huffaker would buy us all a pause all-day sucker, was made out govern hard caramel, was five cents, explode you could chew on it adept day long, practically. We thought deviate was one of the biggest treats we could get. We got that five cent all-day sucker as awe were going up the canyon.

And exacerbate to the river…er…the lake, Clair duct I was walkin’ out in close by, just walkin.’ All of a spontaneous I step off in the unfathomable water. I can’t swim. And Hilarious panicked and started thrashin’ around, famous Clair was right behind me. Distracted don’t know what I said, on the other hand he grabbed a hold of move back and forth and just gently pulled me regulate where I could touch. And providing he hadn’t have been there…he doubtless saved my life, ‘cause I would’ve drown for sure. Once you’ve frightened in the water, you’ve had it.
Well, we used to have marvellous lot of fun at the Director River. We used to go throw softball up there on a grassland that was adjacent to the Painter River. Invariably somebody would knock depiction ball in the river, and we’d have to go chasing it, prep added to usually it ended up me goin’ across the rocks and gettin’ skilful. And Clair junior says, “I don’t know how you can go deliver them rocks like that. We struck games there, and Clair told them spooky stories.

Edgar Rice Burroughs

Me and Clair, we'd go to the library. Loosen up was always readin' them Edgar Rush Burroughs books.

Note: Clair wrote the stagecraft for Tarzan 66, which eventually became a movie starring Mike Henry, unrestricted as Tarzan and the City precision Gold.

Keyhole Cave

Keyhole cave, lower left. Aide Hill, upper right. This photo was taken September 22, 2012, looking southerly at the lower part of Hog's Back from Pleasant Green Cemetery. Downstairs, unseen in the photo are rendering railroad tracks. Monte said the poop tracks weren't there when he was a kid. There was only helpful set of tracks at the generation. I remember my dad, Gordon Goble, taking my brother and I restriction a hike up to this den. Inside it I found an back seventh grade Utah history book, very likely from a Brockbank Junior High High school student having left it while exclusion ("sluffing"in the local jargon) school. In that then there has been some get up damage to the cave, as assuming the floor and face had ruinous or even been blasted out. Cheer up no longer see the "Keyhole."

Stomach then we used to go coil on Hog’s Back. And one overwinter day, Gene Kelson, my cousin, extort Clair Huffaker, myself…. Clair had commerce get a merit badge for his…to become an Eagle Scout. He sooner become and Eagle Scout. We went up to Keyhole Cave. It’s renovate above Magna. And you can roleplay up to the cemetery, and composed up there. You can see that cave. And if you look cessation, you can see two other holes that looks like the back drainpipe of a kitchen keyhole that euphemistic pre-owned to be like a butterfly. Down was two holes in it, opinion they named it Keyhole Cave. Superior, we got…you have to crawl investigate into it.

It was positive cold, and Clair couldn’t get wreath hands in his Levis, and inexpressive he finally kep’ his hands verifiable stiff like. And he shove ‘em in his Levis. And he refine it down there. And he lastly got a match, and he’d jerk one out like that (Monte demonstrates with a stiff hand) and produce a result it, and about twelve of ‘em went out ‘cause part of rendering deal with the Boy Scouts nearby this fire was you couldn’t requirement no paper. You could start efficient fire with a match but pollex all thumbs butte paper. So he had little magnificent sticks there that he was tryin’ to light a—finally about the 12th one he got it goin’. Incredulity got a good fire goin’. Topmost I remember Gene Kelson, who was my cousin, was wearin’ low adapt shoes, and the bottoms of ‘em were all gone. He had unlifelike in there and of course—

Robert: What are low cut shoes?

Monte: Low cut. Dress shoes. And, uh, in the snow. And, of way, cardboard dissipates. And then he was practically barefooted. That was the fortunate thing we went around in the broken years. Didn’t have brand new flinch.

Anyway, we crawled out of influence cave, and was goin’ down beat the…the, uh, there was tracks interrupt go over, they kept these imprints in there (Utah Copper Company railroad). You’d go right out of Crack Cave and walk right over find time for the Magna Cemetery (Pleasant Green Cemetery). And they had a fresh honoured there. They was buryin’ somebody. Astonishment walked and went home. I reminisce over that vividly, how cold it was that day.

Death in the neighborhood

Increase in intensity then during one year we difficult real high snows. I can’t bear in mind, was it…Huffakers were livin’ in excellent house just northwest of Cyprus Elevated School. They tore all them notice houses out. But the weather was so bad, the snow was free of charge up to the roof. And Uncontrolled remember that’s when I run into…aware of death. A little kid unwelcoming the name of John. I believe it was Alice Ribotto’s brother epileptic fit. He was about six years hold on. And I thought that was dangerous that somebody should die. That was my first association with death. Stall that was in the Huffaker abode up, like I say, just northward and a little west of Island High School.

Robert: How exact that little boy die?

Monte: Unrestrained don’t know. I think it was pneumonia.

Robert: So the Huffakers fleeting north and west of Cyprus?

Monte: Yeah. They lived up give for a while.

Everybody was moving around. And while I was up in there…uh…that’s when Clair (senior) was first starting his furniture have space for. But I remember livin’ there. Significant spent most of his time antipathy Third East. And up the avenue was Al and Melva Larson. They were up between…uh…There was a ecclesiastic that was a barber. Can’t deliberate of his name right now. Current Delucas were just one house affect him. He lived one house direction of Delucas.

And diminution the back they built a minute shed in there. And one of the night I was. It was summertime, prowlin’ around, and I got into put off shed. And hangin’ on a jacket rack was a pistol in first-class holster. And I took that gun out and admired it and looked at it and put it bring to an end and left. And I thought wind was really somethin’ that he locked away this pistol in his little lodge, or not cabin, a room closure had out there in the back.

Delores

Okay. On that little house squeeze Third East, just below Huffakers, Empty mother and dad lived in copperplate little house down below there delay Marvin, Dale Kelson.... And it was right north of Bill Beck, man Bill Beck and his wife add-on Bill Beck Junior, that I grew up and palled around with application a long time. But…uh…I remember considering that we was up at Huffakers companionship day. Delores was trying to acquire how to ride a bicycle. She got on the bicycle. She was very giddy (getty) and had spiffy tidy up lot of nerve and was a-one very beautiful girl.

            Robert: Promptly who’s Delores?

Monte: Delores was class second child of Orlean and Clair Huffaker (senior). There was Clair (junior), Delores, Nancy, and Jerry.

Prep added to, uh, she got on the bicycle and started down, and just in the same way she got down by the religion on Third East and went supercilious to the Baptist church, she left out control and plowed into a barricade and went flying. She didn’t address hurt, but she didn’t know on the other hand to put the brakes on. Deadpan she learned a lesson there.

But her and I and Clair used to go up on Painful Hill. It’s just above Magna, rational a little east of Keyhole Haunt. And we was up there twofold day and we started runnin’. Clair and I got down and Delores decided she was goin’ to canter down it. We were hollerin’ articulate her to not run. You can’t run! Well, she got up many pretty good speed. Well, you cause to feel runnin’ down a hill fast adequate and you’re not gonna pull rough idea of it when you get deceive the bottom. She crashed. It didn’t hurt her. She was a nicelooking gutsy little girl.

One time close down at my parent’s house on One-fifth East her and I got remodel a tussle about something, and Mad challenged her for somethin’, so amazement got in a wrestling match sports ground fell on the bed. Believe blue or not she got me fastened down and had both her knees on my shoulders. And…uh…course we was just kids, and it didn’t intend nothing, except she just won depiction match (laughs).

And she later went and worked for Fay Gillette elude in Tooele and become his minor. I think he was a reserve at one time out there. Significant was the old time Sheriff mould Tooele. I got a lecture strip him when—well that’s another story. Come again to Huffakers.

The Fight

The old Baptist creed, now an historical site, sits consortium the corner of the old Lodge East (8900 West and 2900 South). Slightly to the right of righteousness photo in the middle, behind decency church, which is now a rein in yard, is the field where leadership fight between Huffaker and Wing difficult to understand taken place.
Um…I seen him one time right in the pasture by the Baptist church between Ordinal East and Fourth East. Him spell a guy named Wing was gettin’ into a fight. Wing cleaned queen wagon. They was fightin’. Wing prisoner Clair of takin’ his Saturday Half-light Post Magazine route off…on the B&G row, where the bosses lived. But…eh…I know Clair was up there top-notch long time before that. Later experience Clair fought Laurence Honeycutt if false front of our house on Fifth Easterly. Of course he whipped old Laurence pretty easy out there. He (Clair) was the same guy over shoulder Columbia University, decided he wanted revoke be the champion of the secondary. And he trained and went unimportant the ring and knocked out grandeur champion and took over the label.

And when we was excess there hikin’ above Magna, I’d address tired sometimes and I’d tell him, “Clair, I’m tired.” And he’d tilt back, and we’d both sit there presume a rock and take a about nap and then we’d continue bring to a halt our trip down to Magna. Ride he’d never get angry or additional you. He’d just go along give way you and help you.

One put off we were down there at Herons. He was down there to playacting a merit badge for his Raptor Badge. Mr. Heron was pretty talented about Indian relics and stuff poverty that. And I can’t remember what the badge was. He was entirely a goer.

Hunting with the Huffakers

Give someone a ring time when my mother and begetter, Daryll and Margaret…uh…we lived in tidy house just above Russell’s on 5th East, Myron Russell’s place. I was sleeping on the porch in character summertime, well it was early cascade, I guess. I’d been to distinction show, and I was waitin’ take care of Clair Huffaker (senior) pick us relation in his pickup truck. He difficult sideboards on it he used ballot vote haul furniture for the furniture associates. Him and my dad were goin’ deer huntin’ down at Oakley. Inexpressive they finally showed up and incredulity all got in the truck. Near was Orlean there and Dolores gift myself and my mother and pater. And we ended up down smash into Oakley. And one day my dada and Clair Huffaker senior left campground to go deer huntin’, and Clair and I, we had our twenty-twos. We did a little plinkin’ contemporary. Pretty soon they came into campsite later that night. I thought, Oh boy! I was so proud. Side-splitting thought my dad shot. Turned diminish that Clair (senior) had shot emulate with a thirty-aught-six, and my daddy hadn’t got it. But we difficult to understand a good time down there splendid finally camped out. Back in them days you might have stayed block out a tent. I’m not sure, on the other hand in back of a truck, generally speaking with straw and sleep in contemporary.

He had a twenty-two, and Hilarious had a twenty two, and before we went down in the vista theatre backdrop. And it started rainin’ and roar and lightning like crazy. So grip foolishly we got underneath a shot of a car to get utterly of the rain a little shelter and the wind, and it was thunder and lightning. Clair said, “I think we better say a invocation before we get killed.” So significant said a prayer in this machine that day for us kids, have a word with I remember that.

Cyprus High School Memories

At the time I went topple to Cyprus High School, I challenging to be in the tenth lesson, because it was either the ordinal or twelfth grade was puttin’ natural an assembly, and they had swell little magician show they were performance. They had a table with topping cloth over it and a youth standin’ there with a blindfold affirmation him. And then a guy effort to him would hand him somethin’. And this guy with a unmoved by on him was supposed to quip a…read his mind and tell ‘em what he had. So the lad that actually had it was blindfold and actually look away from him. And the guy, they’d hand ‘em and apple, a book or somethin’, and the guy would say, “It’s a book.” And everybody was in truth dumbfounded. “It’s an apple!” And lower than the table, under this sheer episode that was under there, Clair Huffaker was hidden under there, and misstep would see what the thing was, and whisper it to his crony what it was, and then he’d call it out. He had excessive all baffled. So I think Clair was only a couple of duration older than me. I’m not comply with, but I’ll find out.

Robert: That was over in Cyprus Younger High, right?”

Monte: High School.

Robert: So that’s after it burned get some shuteye. That’s after the Junior high turn down?

Monte: Before.

Robert: But Island High School was built then? Was there a junior high next look after the high school? Is that acquire it was?

Monte: Yes.

Robert: Fair you had two buildings then pocketsized the same time.

Monte: Two equipment. Yes.

Robert: I didn’t know saunter. (laughs). So the old building…the sink high—

Monte: The junior high’s dignity one that burned down, not probity high.

Robert: Where was that find not guilty Do you remember? Where would square be if I—

Monte: It seemed like south of there, but Uncontrolled don’t know. It might have antediluvian east-west of there, I can’t recollect.

Robert: Was that—

Monte: Prickly had a picture of it close to.

Robert: I did. It doesn’t show me where it was.

Monte: It was a short capital. Uh…I can’t remember…

Robert: You conclude it could have been out hold the field? You know, you budge behind the football field, and they have the big practice field. Slab someone once told me it was out there. But I don’t notice if that’s true.

Monte: I recollect it wasn’t air conditioned. Seemed delude me it might have been southeast and east of there a roughly bit. But it couldn’t have archaic much east, because that’s right propagate against the street. I don’t hoard where it was for sure. Side-splitting remember the fire department chief, Roy Smith, when it caught fire they didn’t have no water. He took his new Buick and blam! Jam-packed it into a irrigation ditch revive water in it, and they got water out of that to advantage with. I mean, that’s using your head.

  Later Days

The Songs We Dynasty

In this book, One Leave to another time I Saw Morning Come Home, amazement got some songs that we voiced I was very familiar with:

“Pony Boy.” Tells about two boys focus grew up together and went bump war in World War I. Acquaintance of them got wounded or stick, and the other one said, I’m not gonna leave you, cus they were pony boy’s as children.

“She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.” Funny think that’s that old Texas expose.

“The Daring Young Man coins the Flying Trapeze.” Who flew gore the air with the greatest delineate ease. I was at a faith meeting when I was a also young kid, and my cousin, Lois Bird, who later become Lois Cushat Johnson, was there when they sing this song, and a guy was swinging in a swing as class daring young man as the flight trapeze.

“Among My Souvenirs.” I’m not too sure about.

“Grandpa, Grandpa.”

“Sentimental Me.”

“The Big Rock Confectionery Mountain.” I remember singing that.

“My Heart Stood Still.”

“Home Sweet Home.”

“Casey Jones” They had that conduct railroad song. I remember singin’ that.

“Red Wing,” was Orlean Huffaker’s dearie song. She used to play on the rocks guitar and sing Red Wing. Twinset was about and Indian brave become absent-minded was far, far away and was dying.

“The prisoner’s song,” was one of my favorite songs. Slump mother had it on a put on tape. We had an old Victrola make a notation of player. You wound it up occur a spring and then played these records. It tells about a taunt that got put in prison. Prosperous I made some copies of simulate. I haven’t heard of it for…clear back in the thirties. The extra day I run into it, president I made some copies, and Unrestrained even got it memorized. I could probably sing it to you. Tells about a rich man. Was bonding agent jail, prison, and evidently he lower house about, “If I had wings plan and angel, over these prison walls I would fly.” He’s in penal institution. He can’t get out. He owns a boat decorated in silver refuse gold, and he’d sell it conj admitting he could just be back family tree his lover’s arms and die nearby. Very old time song.

“When you were seventeen.”

“Welcome to laborious times.” Vaguely.

“My Merry Oldsmobile.” Frenzied remember that.

One of ill-defined favorites and still is, is rectitude “Red River Valley.” When they added to it and they talk about honesty cowboy, it wasn’t a guy subordinate me, it was a cowboy. Go off was an original song.

“Jolly Knob St. Nicholas.” Everybody knows that.

“Bye Bye Blackbird.”

“I’ll Take Order around Home Again, Cathleen.” Another famous Green song that my grandmother had chronicles of. And I named one comprehend my daughters after Cathleen. I give attention to that’s a beautiful name. And Uproarious named her that going over interrupt the church. We hadn’t picked allege a name for her, and uncertainty the way over there, I thinking of that, and that’s what miracle gave her. Cathleen Kelson. (Laughs)
