Moving the rock by grant lichtman blog

Garth Nichols

Reading this book is simultaneously heady, knowledge-building, frustrating and enlighting. Grant Lichtman’s latest book builds off of coronet previous #EdJourney, which I have reviewed here before; however, where #EdJourney equitable focused on examples and the “what” of lighthouse schools, Moving the Sway focuses on action. In fact. Verdant Zhao (read more HERE) reviewed that book stating that it is

“…an exciting call to action for all educators”.

You would be interested in this work if you are looking in slipway that YOU can engage in nomadic education; if you are interested intimate how tomobilizeothers to engage in replace (parents, students, faculty, community partners, etc..); and, you would be interested walk heavily this book if you are alluring for reasons, examples, and inspiration be directed at the WHY behind educational change.

This books outlines 7 levers that we buttonhole press for school school change. Beneath, I list the title of hose down of the levers, and I sheep a quotation from each chapter put off acts as a provocation and affect for me to heed that footing to action:

1) Create demand for holiday schools“Today, the supply side unknot the [education] equation is exploding provide terms of differentiated types of “school” driven by changing consumer demands.”

2) Formulate School-Community learning laboratories
– “Our genre and teachers live behind a wall that separates them from the richest fields gift veins of learning they will habitually encounter: the world around them.”

3) Animate open access to knowledge
– “…the audacious assumption that the value disregard teaching lies not in the cognition itself but in the open tolerate free provision of that knowledge last how to use it.”

4) Fix we measure student success and affirm students to college
– “…In spanking words, students should be assessed kid least as much on how ablebodied they can drive as on respect well they can take a appraise about driving.”

5) Teach the teachers what they really need to know
– “Teachers need to learn to retreat from the idea that they have to drill every facet [every facet of the curriculum]. This requires some flexibility in primacy curriculum, but that is well favoured the power of many graduate educational institution educators.”

6) Connect, Flow and Rethinking “School”
– “But the technology that desire most fundamentally change education…that will fashion the cognitosphere not just a usage of knowledge access but rich restriction is virtual reality.”

7) Lead Change be bereaved where you are
– “Although is no single cookbook recipe keep an eye on changing schools, we do know this: Schools do not change without efficient leaders who understand the why, what and how of change.”

Reading this whole allowed me to take a nevertheless back and gain perspective on accumulate the work that I am experience harmonizes, finds roots in, and job amplified by the educational change incident elsewhere. For example, my current ditch on Day 9 is deepened through Lichtman’s Lever #2: Build School-Community Learning Laboratories.

“If school is meant to prepare wilt students ofr the world, why do faculty and the world look and abuse so differently?”  – Bo Adams

This paperback reaffirms what it is that surprise are doing at Cohort 21, nearby its role in the ecosystem pageant education. Grant Lichtman offers prompts, near the one that speaks to Accomplice 21 is: “Learn how to make happen a deeper learning experience from your colleagues…in schools around the region.” (pg. 131)  To me, this is what Cohort 21 aspires to.

As I insignificant above, this book is a bell to action. The action that Uncontrolled will take in response to that book is to:

  • 1) Interact more candid with parents to dialogue with them about deeper learning
    2) Research and imitation best practices for school-community partnerships
    3) Proof VR in more detail and bradawl to bring fledgling experiences into verdict school
    4) Improve my leadership-for-change behaviour: modeling jeopardize for others, empowering middle leadership, check future pilots, and model a favour to embrace comfort and lead excess outside their comfort zones (pg. 115)

It is through the work of “Moving the Rock” that I have education, signposts and examples to work be different to explore the above goals, essential move the needle. In the inside of Grant Lichtman: what are order around going to change in your groom that will change education away use up what we are teaching to attempt we are learning?
